Beginning in the 1960s, and following
the onset of conceptual art, photography became an important media
utilized by contemporary artists and likewise a popular medium for
spectators to enjoy. At a time when Chinese photography is easily
accessible in art institutions, MoCA Shanghai eagerly anticipates
the launch of Unseen, a showcase of international photography that
has yet to be exhibited in China.
MoCA Shanghai chairman and director Samuel Kung,
illustrates his support for emerging contemporary photographers
with an exhibition displaying the world's up-and-coming artists.
"In this exhibition we have invited young curators along with
10 international artists to express the innovation of the new century.
It is the aim of MoCA Shanghai to encourage the emerging generations
of artists and curators with opportunities in the art field, and
only by promoting and awarding their efforts with experience, will
well be able to further pursue successfully the development of arts
in China."
As one of the curators of the exhibition, Peng Yangjun's
enthusiasm towards new and cutting-edge photography in China is
realized in Unseen, a photography exhibition that showcases the
work of international photographers born during the 1970s and 80s.
Peng says: "At this time, we propose a new approach in our
exhibition display by showcasing young and talented artists, whose
works represent the best from around the world. In this way, the
artistic approach and technical methods of these foreign artists
creates a dialogue with the local photographers and audience. At
the same time, we hope this exhibition will achieve a innovative
and open set of artistic achievements in China."
Co-Curator Chen Jiaojiao believes these artists'
works have captured the essence of their time. "Although the
artists are young, their talent is unchallenged and their work extremely
mature. Many of these artists have received international awards,
participated in important exhibitions and several of these works
on display already belong to the museum collections of prestigious
art institutions around the world.
Representing the most recent developments in photography
and covering a range of current themes, nearly all of the more than
100 photos will be exhibited for the first time in China. From fashion
to documentary and including portrait and art photography, Unseen
brings to China an exhibition that is as rich and varied in style
as it is in content.
